COP29 – understanding the UN climate summit

The UN’s annual global climate summit takes place this November, in Azerbaijan – providing significant opportunities for planetary progress.

During the first six months of 2024, half of G20 countries experienced extreme weather events. June was the thirteenth consecutive month of global temperatures averaging 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. We are hurtling towards irreversible tipping points.

The need for change has never been clearer – and COP29 is a critical UN forum to generate action and agreement from countries around the world.

But there is also concern and controversy. Can a major fossil fuel exporter, and a COP President who spent decades working at the national oil company, lead genuine action?

The context is important to understand – particularly for any organisations who want a voice around the event.

To summarise what to expect from COP29, and the various opportunities for engagement, Forster has developed a briefing pack.
